Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are refusing to put Archie and Lilibet in the spotlight, sources have claimed, as the Duke of Sussex cited "genuine concerns".

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are keeping Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, out of the limelight over concern for their children's safety.

Prince Harry, 39, is currently fighting for increased security for their family of four.

He frequently echoes the 1997 death of his mother, Princess Diana, in a high-speed car chase, claiming it weighs on him heavily, particularly now he is a parent.

A friend of the duke said: "Harry has been reluctant to show his children publicly, not out of a desire to hide them but to protect their privacy and safety from potential threats.

"He wants them to lead as normal a life as possible without the fear of kidnapping or harm."

The friend continued to tell People Magazine: “As a dad and husband, Harry is determined to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself."

In the ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial, which aired in the UK on July 25, Prince Harry voiced his fears that negative press could provoke a violent attack on his wife.

"All it takes is one lone actor," he said.

Harry cited these "genuine concerns" as his reason for not bringing Meghan, 42, Archie, and Lilibet back to the UK.

The father-of-two added: "Look at what has happened in the last four years to me, my wife and my family, right?

"So that was a very hard decision for me to make, which is, how bad is it going to get?"

ITV reporter Rebecca Barry asked the duke: "Some would say that you taking on these high-profile battles actually attracts more attention onto you?"

Harry responded: "There is more than enough attention on me and my wife anyway.

"There was... they pushed me too far. It got to a point where you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't.

"I don't think there's anybody else in the world that is better suited and placed to be able to see this through than myself.

"It's still dangerous. And all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff, to act on what they have read...

"And whether it's a knife or acid, whatever it is.

"And these are things that are a genuine concern for me.

"It's one of the reasons why I won't bring my wife back to this country."
