Meghan Markle has been given a boost as Princess Kate's favourite designer has made a major move.

Givenchy, the Italian fashion house that designed the Duchess of Sussex's 2018 wedding dress, took to social media with an important announcement.

They wrote: "Givenchy announces the appointment of Sarah Burton as Creative Director, with immediate effect.

"Sarah will be responsible for the creative direction of all of the Maison’s Women's and Men's collections.

"Her first collection will be presented in March 2025."

Burton, 50, received international acclaim in 2011 after she was revealed as the designer behind Princess Kate's wedding dress.

At the time, it was announced that Kate's lace wedding dress, which strongly echoed that of Grace Kelly, was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

Burton worked as the creative creator for Alexander McQueen for 26 years, and was its creative director for 13 of those years.

She took over the role in 2010, following the death of its founder Lee Alexander McQueen.

Burton's move to Givenchy will strike a chord with many royal fans, as the Italian fashion house famously designed Meghan Markle's wedding dress when she married Prince Harry in 2018.

Speaking about the role, which is effective immediately, Burton said: "It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel.

"I am so excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs."

As the second woman to head design at Givenchy, Sarah follows in the footsteps of Clare Waight Keller, the designer behind Meghan's dress.

Keller was Givenchy's creative director between 2017 and 2020.

She spoke about the Duchess of Sussex's gown during the couple's 2022 Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, appearing on episode four.

During the episode, Keller said the minimalist silk outfit, without lace or any other embellishments, had to be "flawless".

She said: "Looking at the design of the dress, there were many conversations about how you want to present yourself to the world. Most of us have a wedding with 70 to a hundred people.

"This was billions of people watching. It has to be flawless, it has to be perfect."
