The Duchess of Sussex released a video on Instagram to mark New Years Day

Meghan Markle has made a dramatic return to social media, launching her first Instagram account since stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

The Duchess of Sussex debuted her new @meghan handle on New Year's Day 2025 with a playful video on a beach in California filmed by Prince Harry.

The footage shows Meghan running along the shoreline and drawing '2025' in the sand.

This marks Meghan's first personal social media presence since she and Harry ceased using their Sussex Royal account when they stepped down as senior royals nearly five years ago.

The couple's previous joint Instagram account had been established in April 2019, following their split from the Kensington Palace household.

The new social media appearance comes amid speculation about the couple's relationship, as they have been making multiple solo public appearances in recent months with their last joint in-person engagement coming in August.

Despite their separate public engagements, the beach video appears to offer intimate glimpses into their private life in Montecito.

Body language expert Judi James suggests the video reveals deeper meanings about the couple's relationship.

"It looks like a very confident but playful Meghan is re-opening that Pandora's box that is social media here, posting an enigmatic little video that is more celebrity in mood than royal," James told the Mirror.

She noted that Meghan's behaviour appears directed at the person behind the camera.

James also addressed Meghan's return to social media, observing: "The gap in her personal social media use seems to have been about privacy but here she looks happy but a little coy about opening up those doors again."

The expert suggested this move could help Meghan "control the narrative" amid speculation and rumours.

She added: "Her dilemma might have been that a lack of direct communication can lead to speculation and rumour, while some direct chats will allow her to control the narrative again."

James compared Meghan's video to the three minute film the Princess of Wales released in September 2024, when Kate announced she had completed her chemotherapy treatment.

"Catherine's stunning video with William and their children (released in September 2024) might have been the toe-dip in the water that proved it is possible to be royal and to share or reveal your emotions in a way you might not be able to do in public life."
