'They won't want her!' Meghan Markle poised to miss Kamala Harris' 'coronation' as support reaches 'rock bottom'
GETTY
Meghan Markle will likely miss Kamala Harris' coronation as the Democratic Party’s nominee to take on Donald Trump as support for the Duchess of Sussex reaches “rock bottom”, an expert has claimed.
The Duchess of Sussex, who reportedly flirted with launching her own political career, is not expected to join a star-studded list of celebrities ready to endorse the Vice President at the Democratic National Convention on Monday.
Beyonce, Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift have all also been earmarked as potential attendees at Chicago's United Center.
Meghan is seen as potentially damaging to the Democratic Party when it comes to voters needed to defeat the Republicans.
Andrew Cockburn, the Washington DC editor of Harper’s, told Tatler magazine that Meghan's current influence on voters is negligible.
Cockburn said: “I haven't heard any rumours. I'm sure she'd like to, but her selling power has really gone pretty rock bottom here.”
He added: “I don't think she would have much effect. I doubt she’ll show up at the Convention. I doubt they’d want her there.”
It would also appear logistically unlikely for Meghan to head to Chicago after touring Colombia in a quasi-royal visit alongside her husband Prince Harry.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been in Bogota since Thursday after being invited to the South American country by Vice-President Francia Márquez.
However, Harris has previously voiced support for Meghan, sharing a video uploaded by the mother-of-two about the Black Lives Matter movement.
In other social media posts, the Vice President said “we are with you” and thanked the Duchess for making a “powerful statement”.
Meghan, who previously labelled Trump as “misogynistic” and “divisive”, could even look to mount her own campaign in the near future after a royal expert said the Duchess was “well-poised” to run for office.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:Speaking to GBN America, the BBC’s former royal correspondent Michael Colde said: “She's made no secret of her political interest from a very young age, and all those interests have been in the Democratic cause.
“To such an extent that when former President Trump, as president, made a state visit to Britain, she absented herself.
“She didn't want to be presented to Trump. Such was her disdain for the Donald. It has been rumoured that maybe she will look towards a political career in California because there has been precedent in the past.”
He added: “Meghan Markle has never been shy about making her political views known. And it is interesting that when she married Prince Harry in Britain, she did become a member of the Church of England.
“She was baptised into the Anglican Church, but she did not take British citizenship. She is not a British subject.
“So she kept her American nationality very much alive. So she would be quite well poised.”
Meghan last year received the surprise endorsement of Joe Biden’s sister Valerie Biden Owens.
However, Meghan received just one per cent support in a McLaughlin & Associates poll of the Democratic Party’s primary race in January.
“The more women we have, the better our democratic system will work, with a better point of view, a different point of view and we embrace all women,” she continued.
“We welcome [Meghan] to come in and join the Democratic Party.”
A number of celebrities have reached high office in America, including actor-turned-leader Ronald Reagan.
Despite his wife being seen as damaging to the Democratic Party, Prince Harry also appeared to take a swipe at Trump ally Elon Musk.
Speaking about Musk after the Tesla CEO locked horns with Sir Keir Starmer, the Duke of Sussex said: “What happens online within a matter of minutes transfers to the streets. People are acting on information that isn't true.”
