The new King and Queen will meet with other Nordic royal families on their Scandinavian tour

King Frederik and Queen Mary are set for their first foreign state tour as Danish monarchs this year.

The royal couple are expected to travel to their Scandinavian neighbours in May in their first official state visit.

In January, Queen Margrethe II formally abdicated the throne in Denmark and her son, King Frederik became King.

The Danish royals will travel to Sweden and Norway to meet with the Nordic monarchs.

The royal palace in Copenhagen announced: “When the King and The Queen travel on their Majesties’ first official state visit to Sweden at the beginning of May, it will, at the same time, kick off a major tour around the Northern region.”

Later in the summer, Frederik and Mary will then travel to two territories of the Danish kingdom, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

The statement read: “The first state visits will provide the occasion for the new king and queen to meet with the sovereigns in Sweden and Norway, and they will thus mark the close relations between the Nordic monarchies.”

From May 6 to 7, King Frederik and Mary will travel to Stockholm to meet with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

The next week the Danish royals will travel to Oslo where they will be greeted by King Harald V and Queen Sonja.

For the duration of their trip, they will travel from country to country aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.

The official visit to the Faroe Islands and Greenland is “tentative” but for now it is expected that the Danish monarchs will visit in June and July this year.

Last week, Frederik travelled to Poland for his first overseas visit as King, but the Queen did not join him.

This led to Prince Christian, Denmark’s 18-year-old heir stepping up as head of state.

Christian, the King’s eldest son, took on the role ahead of the Queen as he is “deputy regent” and so the role falls to him first.

The Crown Prince took on his father’s role with duties such as signing laws, public appearances and appointing or dismissing ministers.

King Frederik travelled to Poland for three days where he visited Nato’s regional headquarters and opened a business conference amongst other duties.
