The diagnosis of cancer “came as a huge shock” to the King as he was recuperating from his prostate operation at Sandringham, royal author Katie Nicholl has revealed.
She told GB News: “This is going to be a huge setback for him. I’ve spoken to sources close to the King. This news came as a huge shock to the King, to the Queen, and to everyone around them.
“At the time he was recuperating at Sandringham, I'm told rather impatiently, such is his determination to hurry to get back to work, and he was already doing light desk duties after that procedure for an enlarged prostate.
“So, to discover something is obviously quite seriously wrong, totally separate to what he went in for, well, you can imagine on a personal level how that must feel but for him as head of state with that question mark.”
In a discussion During Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster, she added: “How's he going to cope with this treatment?
“Is he going to be back at work as soon as he might and others might expect? There's a lot of uncertainty.”
She added: “The King is very optimistic. He'd been told by his medics it has been found early and the prognosis is good.
“What he's done, which is remarkable, and with the Duchess of York about her breast cancer diagnosis, and a recent skin cancer diagnosis, they've opened up in a way that's very unusual for the Royal Family…
“The public will be very understanding as he moves forward with his recovery and I'm sure as soon as he's able to, he's going to be back to doing those duties.
“He'll be reading the papers in his boxes. It's just any public outward work is going to be hard for him.”
On Prince Harry’s return to the UK, she said: “We know the Prince of Wales is going to step up. We've seen the Queen stepping up.
“Is there a possibility that we can see the Duke of Sussex throwing in his life in California coming back with his wife and children to a frosty Britain and resuming public duties? I can't see that happening.”
