King Charles still "deeply regrets the pain and sadness caused" by his divorce from the late Princess Diana, according to an insider.
After coming to an agreement in July, the then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana finalised their divorce in August 1996, after 15 years of marriage.
The insider said that both Charles and Diana "behaved badly in that first marriage and made decisions that none of us could ever condone."
They added:"But we can seek to try to understand them."

"When you look back on it now, asking someone to sacrifice... happiness for the sake of their public persona seems really quite cruel," the insider told the Mail.
A close friend of Camilla revealed that although the 77-year-old royal was previously widely unpopular with members of the public following Charles's split from Princess Diana, she was committed to their relationship.
Speaking on stepping away from the spotlight, the friend insisted: "I don’t think she was ever going to do that.
"She was committed to him."

The royal couple faced two significant challenges after making the historic decision, an ex-courtier told the Mail.
They said: "The big question was would the Queen, and the Church, approve it?
"They were two tricky obstacles to overcome."

A source told the publication that Charles and Camilla's biggest challenge, when deciding to get married, was the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who was "unwilling to grant them permission to get married in a church."
The late Queen Elizabeth II did not attend the ceremony as head of the Church of England, but gave a blessing at St George’s Chapel and a speech at the reception afterwards.
The source described the civil ceremony at the Guildhall in Windsor as "an elegant compromise."
