The King, 76, and Queen, 77, are marking their 20th wedding anniversary on April 9

King Charles and Camilla have landed in Italy just days after the Queen’s sister made rare comments about Their Majesties' marriage.

The King, 76, and Queen, 77, are marking their 20th wedding anniversary on April 9 by spending the evening as guests of honour at a black tie State Banquet hosted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Their Majesties are on a state visit to Italy, a trip that coincides with the Catholic jubilee year, an event that only happens every 25 years.

The four-day visit will see Charles and Camilla attend a series of public and diplomatic events in the capital, Rome, and the city of Ravenna.

The trip comes just days after Annabel Elliot, the Queen's younger sister, made her feelings clear about Camilla's marriage.

Speaking on her sister's relationship with the King, Elliot said: "They have known each other for a long time, almost their entire lives.

"Theirs, as any marriage should be, is a huge friendship."

Elliot added: "The key thing is that there is not really anything competitive between them. She is not trying to steal his thunder in any way at all. He is the King. And she will do her best to support him and be totally loyal to him.

"She is a very strong character and she sticks to her guns.

"It’s quite extraordinary when I look back at how she has coped with everything.

"She is incredibly loyal to people she loves… She is a very straightforward person. You always know where you stand."

She continued to tell the Mail: "They rather like quite a lot of things going wrong. Things going wrong on a tour, or something like that."

Elliot concluded: "I like being part of their postmortems afterwards, and my sister – which is quite a thing that is known to all our family – is quite prone to exaggeration.

"And so the story often gets better and better and the King will [fondly] interject, 'I’m not sure it’s quite like that darling'.

"I would almost say it’s the biggest gift she has given him.

"The humour. It’s been such a bond between them. And even if they argue, they will always laugh."
