The 88-year-old pontiff made his first official appearance before crowds at the Vatican over the weekend.

This came just a fortnight after his release from hospital, where he spent five weeks being treated for a life-threatening bout of double pneumonia.

The meeting coincided with their 20th wedding anniversary.

The private audience took place at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.
