The King and Queen underwent a four-day state visit to Italy last week

King Charles and Queen Camilla received personalised jars of Nutella from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during their state visit to Italy last week.

The monarch's jar bore his name "Charles" in gold letters, whilst the Queen's was inscribed with "Camilla".

Meloni included a personal note with the gift, describing it as "a useful gift to enjoy on the couch on rainy days".

The presentation took place during the King's official meeting with the Italian Prime Minister at Villa Doria Pamphili in Rome last Wednesday.

A spokesman for Ferrero said on Sunday: "We were happy to receive the request from the prime minister to make two personalised jars of Nutella available so they could be used as state gifts."

The gifts came at the end of the royal couple's first overseas trip this year, as the King continues to undergo treatment for cancer.

During the visit to Rome and Ravenna, crowds lined up for hours in the spring sunshine, waving British flags in hopes of catching a glimpse of the royals.

King Charles, 76, made history as the first British monarch to address the Italian parliament.

He charmed his audience with his knowledge of Italian and received a standing ovation after calling for both nations to work together to defend common values.

He said: "Peace is never to be taken for granted."

The trip also included a surprise meeting with Pope Francis, who is recovering from pneumonia, and a state dinner hosted by President Sergio Mattarella coinciding with their 20th wedding anniversary.

Meloni's choice of Nutella as a parting gift for the royal couple is not without precedent.

In December last year, she gave each of her cabinet ministers personalised jars of the popular hazelnut spread as Christmas presents.

The Nutella, which is produced by the Italian confectionery brand Ferrero, was accompanied by instructions on how to use the product.

Despite Italy's renowned selection of exquisite wines, cheeses, and olive oils, which might seem more fitting for royal recipients, the Prime Minister opted for this more unconventional gift.

The personalised jars were presented during a visit during which the King and Queen were warmly welcomed at every stage of their brief journey.
