His Majesty fully supports Prince William's desire to put family first

King Charles has not asked his son, Prince William, to step in and carry out royal duties on his behalf, it is understood.

On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced His Majesty had been diagnosed with a form of cancer and would be stepping back from public duties for the foreseeable future.

His son, The Prince of Wales, is back on public engagements today after taking time out to care for his wife, Catherine, who is recovering from abdominal surgery.

Prince William’s focus has been on supporting The Princess of Wales and caring for their three young children.

But the King's serious health scare has led to inevitable questions about whether the heir to the throne should be offering more support.

Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace staff are in daily contact and are looking at ways Prince William could undertake some duties on behalf of the King when required, but no details have been finalised.

The King has not specifically asked his son to stand in for him and wishes to continue his constitutional duties as monarch while receiving cancer treatment.

Any new duties undertaken by the Prince of Wales would be in addition to his own diary of engagements, it is understood, and could be seen as a significant step up in workload.

Today, the Prince of Wales is carrying out an Investiture at Windsor Castle, presenting awards to well-deserving people from the UK and Overseas.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: "The Prince of Wales has an unwavering commitment to duty and service and Investitures are an important part of his royal role, celebrating people up and down the country doing incredible things for their communities."
