King Charles is keen to help his grandchildren avoid the mistakes he made, according to a royal historian.

The King has a close relationship with Prince William and Princess Kate's three children George, Charlotte and Louis.

Professor Chandrika Kaul told Channel 5's documentary The Fab Five: The King's Children that Charles wants his grandchildren to grow up in "as normal a way as possible".

Kaul said: "I think King Charles is very keen that his grandchildren don’t make the mistakes that I think he feels he made, particularly."

The historian continued: "What I think he wants to do is try and help these young grandchildren grow up in as normal a way as possible and create more fully rounded human beings who are unafraid of their emotions."

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have been centre stage this month at the Coronation ceremony and celebrations.

Kate and William's three children featured throughout events across the the three day celebrations.

On May 6, Prince George accompanied his grandfather into Westminster Abbey dressed in a traditional red tunic as one of the King’s Pages of Honour.

Princess Charlotte helped reassure her younger brother Louis by holding his hand as the pair entered Charles’s Coronation service.

The young royals also joined senior members of the monarchy on Buckingham Palace's balcony to watch the flypast.

On May 7, Prince George and Princess Charlotte attended the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.

The Prince and Princess of Wales's children also took part in the Big Help Out initiative on May 8.

The family spent hours renovating some Scouts huts for local members to use in Slough.
