BBC will air a new royal documentary on the King's first year as monarch on Boxing Day

King Charles has shared a joke with son Prince William about his "sausage fingers" in a new documentary, set to be released by the BBC.

Charles III: The Coronation Year is a new fly-on-the-wall film, which follows the build-up to the elaborate Coronation ceremony, which took place in May this year.

During the rehearsals for the Coronation, BBC cameras follow the Royal Family as they nervously prepare for the big day.

Captured in the film, Prince William and King Charles share a rare public moment of affection between father and son.

The Prince of Wales can be seen practising the moment he hands King Charles his 'Stole Royal', an embroidered cloth band which symbolises the sacred nature of kingship.

Prince William then jokes about the fiddly catch of the Stole Royal and quips: "On the day it's not going to go in, is it?"

King Charles then jokes: "'No, [But] you haven't got sausage fingers like mine!"

The royal pair then fall into a fit of laughter, a beautiful moment which will now be shared with royal fans.

In another light-hearted moment from the key rehearsals, Prince William practices his pledge of allegiance to his father.

The Prince of Wales jokes about placing a kiss on King Charles' cheek, tickling his father's face and claiming "your left cheek is better!"

The documentary, set to air on Boxing Day, will also feature previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive interviews with key officials, family and senior royals.

The 90 minute film will highlight key events in the King's first year on the throne, following his mother Queen Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.

The King can be seen showing rare moments of reflection and emotion, as cameras show the King and Queen Camilla witnessing their three crowns being reworked to fit them.

They also see their ceremonial robes being embroidered ahead of the monumental event.

In another highlight from the documentary, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is seen forgetting his lines during rehearsal.

Welby admitted during his interview: "I have a memory that is probably about as good as our spaniel - in other words zero."

King Charles giggles to himself as the Archbishop forgets his speech, seeking reference from his notes.
