The King attended the Easier service on Sunday and shook hands with many members of the public

A royal commentator has said that allowing the King to greet well-wishers after attending the Easter Sunday service at Windsor Castle was "concerning".

Charles Rae told GBN America: "I was confused because as I understood it, the doctors had said you can go to the Windsor service. As long as we take certain precautions."

"There wasn't the same number of people inside the Saint George's Chapel.

"He sat a little bit away from the rest of the congregation, and then he comes out and shakes hands with everybody who's there.

"I understand that he was desperate to be there because it's a very important event in the royal calendar. I think he wanted to ensure that as many people could see him and get close to him as possible, to show that he is on the road to recovery.

"But I was a bit concerned with all the handshaking and I hope it doesn't come back to bite him on his royal bottom, to be perfectly honest. "

It was the King’s most significant public appearance since his cancer diagnosis.

It comes just over a week after the Princess of Wales released an emotional video message revealing that she had just started a course of preventative chemotherapy.

Kate, the Prince of Wales and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who all attended the service last year, were absent from the Easter Sunday service.

The family are spending the Easter holidays together as they adjust to Kate’s diagnosis, which was discovered in post-operative tests after major abdominal surgery.

The princess said the news was a "huge shock" after an "incredibly tough couple of months".

But added that she was "well" and "getting stronger every day". Kensington Palace has not provided an update on when the princess’s treatment will end or when Kate will return to working duties.

However, Kate did note how much she enjoys her work and is looking forward to being back when she is able.

She said: "My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery."

Kate added: "This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.

"As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment."
