The new new banknote design will celebrate the history and culture of First Australians

King Charles’s image is set to be dropped from a commonwealth nation’s banknote.

The monarch will not replace the late Queen Elizabeth II’s image on the new $5 banknotes in Australia.

Queen Elizabeth has been portrayed on Australia’s pink-coloured $5 notes since 1992.

But now, the notes will feature “a new design that honours the culture and history of the First Australians.”

One side of the new notes will show an image of the parliament and the other side will show an Aboriginal theme.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced that the public can have their say into what they want to see on one side of the notes to replace the British monarch.

The Reserve Bank’s assistant governor of business services, Michelle McPhee said: “We invite all Australians to reimagine the $5 banknote in the search for themes that reflect our nation's unique and rich First Nations cultures and history.

“This could be a story passed down for generations, a location, an idea, an instrument or an object that binds a community.”

King Charles III’s image will continue to feature on Australian coins.

The RBA consulted with Australia’s federal government on the change and said that it could take several years for the switch to take place.

The current note with the image of the late Queen will continue to be printed and used until the new notes are ready.

McPhee continued: “Involving the public in this process is vital, and by actively engaging First Nations communities, we can better capture themes that tell our nation’s story.”
