The Vatican could not confirm if the visit would go ahead, with a source telling the Mirror it was "too early to say" if the King would be able to visit.
A source from the Holy City said: "Doctors are still being cautious about whether he will leave hospital any time soon."
"Whenever we mention 'stability' it's still within a picture of a complex situation and the guarded prognosis remains as it is for the moment."
King Charles last visited Italy in 2017, along with Queen Camilla, whilst the royal held the title of the Prince of Wales.
The 76-year-old monarch, who announced he was diagnosed with cancer last February, continues to receive treatment.
Buckingham Palace has issued no further update on the trip since before the Pope was taken to hospital but stated that further details of the visit "will be announced in due course."
The latest palace statement read: "Their Majesties the King and Queen will undertake State Visits to the Holy See and the Republic of Italy in early April 2025. During Their Majesties' State visit to the Holy See, The King and Queen will join His Holiness Pope Francis in celebrating the 2025 Jubilee Year. Traditionally held once every 25 years, the Jubilee is a special year for the Catholic Church; a year of walking together as 'Pilgrims of Hope'.
"During Their Majesties' State Visit to the Republic of Italy, The King and Queen will undertake engagements in Rome and Ravenna, celebrating the strong bilateral relationship between Italy and the United Kingdom."
