Former royal aide Jason Knauf has spoken publicly about the controversy surrounding Meghan Markle's alleged bullying of palace staff.

Knauf, who served as communications secretary for Prince William and Princess Kate for seven years, addressed the intense scrutiny he faced after an internal email he wrote about Meghan was leaked to the media.

The interview on 60 Minutes Australia marks his first public comments about the incident, which garnered significant attention in the lead-up to Prince Harry and Meghan's landmark Oprah Winfrey interview.

During his television appearance, Knauf reflected on his time at the palace and the subsequent media attention that followed the leaked email controversy.

The former aide, who left his royal role in 2022, now works in the charity sector.

In 2018, Knauf sent an internal email raising concerns about Meghan's alleged treatment of palace staff, which became public three years later, just before the Sussexes' Oprah interview.

Meghan, 43, strongly denied the allegations, describing them as "a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation".

Buckingham Palace launched an internal review into the bullying claims, though the findings were never made public.

The controversy extended into 2021 when Knauf became involved in Meghan's legal battle against the Mail on Sunday regarding a private letter to her father.

During the case, Knauf provided emails and messages suggesting Meghan was aware the letter could be leaked, leading to her apology to the court for any unintentional misleading.

Speaking about the media attention that followed, Knauf maintained a philosophical outlook on his experience.

He told 60 Minutes Australia: "I think it, it's tough, but it's probably quite good. You know someone who has been helping other people through how to deal with the public eye. You probably had to take your own medicine sometimes."

When asked if he would do anything differently, Knauf was resolute: "No, it's not what I would've sought, but you know at the end of the day, you get to do an amazing job. You've got to take everything that comes with it."

Despite the controversy, he spoke warmly of his time working with the Sussexes.

He said: "I worked really closely with the two of them and we had lots of great times."

Reflecting on their 2018 wedding, he added: "Working on their wedding was an amazing, magical experience, and you know I wish them absolutely all the best with their lovely family."
