The Princess of Wales stepped back from royal duties after announcing she was diagnosed with cancer in March

The Princess of Wales paid a subtle tribute to those battling cancer, wearing a symbolic black bow at her 'Together at Christmas' carol service.

Kate, 42, paired the meaningful accessory with a red Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen coat as she hosted the annual festive event at Westminster Abbey on Friday evening.

Royal observers have noted that the oversized black bow appears to reference the ribbons worn to show support for those battling various forms of cancer.

The choice of accessory carries particular significance given the Princess's own cancer journey this year, during which she underwent preventative chemotherapy.

The event took place at Westminster Abbey, the same church where she married Prince William, with the Princess looking festive in her carefully chosen ensemble.

In September, the Princess announced via a family video that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment, sharing a heartfelt message of solidarity.

"Everyone's kindness, empathy, and compassion has been truly humbling. To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey - I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand," the Princess said.

The announcement followed her initial cancer diagnosis in March, which was discovered after abdominal surgery.

During that difficult period, she reached out to others facing similar challenges.

"At this time, I'm also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone," she had stated.

The Princess has made only a small number of public appearances throughout her treatment this year.

Throughout 2024, the Princess has incorporated bows into several key public appearances, suggesting a consistent sartorial message.

At Trooping the Colour in June, her first public appearance since December 2023, Kate wore a white Jenny Packham dress featuring a prominent bow at the neck.

In October, she added a bow detail to her Whistles polka dot dress during a visit to Southport with Prince William, where they met bereaved families affected by a tragic knife attack.

Most recently, at November's Remembrance Sunday service, the Princess chose a Catherine Walker military-inspired coat dress adorned with a velvet bow at the collar.

These carefully chosen accessories have become a subtle yet meaningful element of the Princess's public wardrobe throughout her challenging year.
