The Prince and Princess of Wales have made a donation to help fund a new playground at Churchtown Primary School in Southport, honouring three young girls killed in a knife attack last year.

The playground will commemorate Alice Aguiar, nine, and Bebe King, six, who both attended the school, along with seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe.

All three children lost their lives during an attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in July 2024.

The royal couple's contribution was revealed this weekend as fundraising efforts continue.

Churchtown Primary School headteacher Jinnie Payne shared news of the donation as she prepared to run the London Marathon alongside Alice's father, Sergio.

"I want to say a heartfelt thank you to their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales, for their incredibly generous donation to our Churchtown Playground fund," she wrote in a social media message.

Ms Payne's message continued: "Their kindness and thoughtfulness mean so much to our whole community as we come together to honour the memories of Alice and Bebe, two much-loved members of our school family."

She added: "As Alice's dad Sergio, and I prepare to run the London Marathon today in their memory, we are deeply touched and encouraged by William's and Kate's support."

The pair ran the marathon on Sunday in memory of the victims.

The new playground space will honour the girls' memories and provide expanded play areas for pupils.

The attack shocked the nation when teenage killer Axel Rudakubana targeted the dance class in Southport.

Rudakubana was jailed for life in January 2025 for the murders and the attempted murder of eight other children.

He received a minimum term of 52 years.

Prince William and Kate made an emotional visit to Liverpool last October to meet with the families of the three girls.

It marked the princess's first public engagement since completing preventative chemotherapy treatment for cancer.

The royal couple also spent time with dance teacher Leanne Lucas, who was injured while protecting children during the attack.

They later met with emergency responders, with Kate hailing them as "true heroes" and William calling them "true professionals".

In a post following their visit, the couple pledged they "continue to stand with everyone in Southport."
