Gareth Russell has pointed to a clear generational divide in royal social media strategies

Prince William and Princess Kate are "more comfortable" on social media amid their generational divide with King Charles and Queen Camilla, a royal commentator has claimed.

Royal author Gareth Russell has shared exclusive insights with GB News about the contrasting social media strategies employed by different royal households.

Russell discussed the differences between how the King and Queen approach social media compared to the Prince and Princess of Wales.

He also addressed speculation about whether the Royal Family's increased social media presence might be a response to Meghan Markle's recent Instagram launch.

The author offered a nuanced perspective on the communication styles across the royal generations.

Russell clarified that the Royal Family's social media approach is not influenced by the Duchess of Sussex's new Instagram profile.

"The Palaces here will continue business as usual," he told the People's Channel.

"We've actually already seen them start to do slightly more public engagements before the Duchess of Sussex's profile came out and became more active on social media."

He emphasised that Meghan's social media presence would not affect how the monarchy communicates with the public.

The royal expert suggested that any differences in approach stem from pre-existing strategies rather than external factors.

Russell pointed to a clear generational divide in royal social media strategies: "You could potentially see a difference between the way Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace approach things simply because there's a generational gap there."

This age difference naturally influences how each household communicates with the public.

Princess Kate, 43, and Prince William, 42, are millennials, whereas King Charles, 76, and Queen Camilla, 77, are considered from the baby boomer generation.

The expert noted that while all royal households maintain traditional communication channels, their comfort level with newer platforms varies.

The King and Queen tend to follow more conventional approaches compared to the younger royals.

Russell highlighted the Prince and Princess of Wales's more contemporary approach to social media: "You can already see that the Prince and Princess of Wales will often issue personal short statements through X, sometimes on sports results, sometimes on the passing of a notable person."

Despite embracing modern platforms, they maintain royal traditions: "And they're still doing traditional things. There are still official royal announcements."

This balanced approach reflects their position, bridging traditional monarchy and contemporary communication styles.

Russell emphasised that the younger royals' approach to social media reflects their generation rather than external influences: "I think you'll see the Prince and Princess of Wales be a little bit more comfortable with using social media regularly, because most people in their generation are."

This comfort with digital platforms is simply part of their established communication strategy, with Russell concluding: "I think it's more to do with the approach they've already been taking, rather than reacting to the Duchess of Sussex."
