The Princess of Wales and the King have both been diagnosed with cancer this year

Princess Kate and King Charles are enduring "emotional hardship" after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, a cancer specialist has claimed.

The Princess of Wales announced in March that she had undergone preventative chemotherapy after cancer was found in tests following a significant abdominal surgery.

In a statement, the royal confirmed that she would not be undertaking public duties for the foreseeable future to focus on her health.

Despite making an appearance at Trooping the Colour on Saturday, the Palace confirmed Kate is not currently returning to her royal duties.

King Charles was also diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of the year but has since returned to royal duties and is following his doctor's advice.

Speaking to Digital Royal Editor Svar Nanan-Sen and Royal Correspondent Cameron Walker on The Royal Record podcast cancer specialist Karol Sikora explained: "I think everybody takes on what they feel they can cope with, and obviously they've got different types of cancer, different types of treatment, and some treatments are much worse.

"I'd predict that princess's treatment is quite arduous to have, and she's doing very well, considering how arduous it is.

"Charles is probably a bit lighter. The treatment, and therefore the side effects are less, and so he feels able to get back.

"The biggest problem for both of them is living with uncertainty.

"What's going to happen next when they stop the chemotherapy, obviously they'll do blood tests, they'll do scans. What will these scans show? And that's the time of great emotional hardship for cancer patients."

Princess Kate revealed last week that she would be attending Trooping the Colour.

The royal said in a statement: "I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days.

"On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting.

"But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.

“My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months.

“On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.”
