The Princess of Wales announced in January that her cancer is in remission

Princess Kate has emerged from her cancer diagnosis as the "MVP of the royal family" according to royal historian Amanda Foreman.

The Princess of Wales is making a gradual return to royal duties after announcing she had been diagnosed with cancer in March last year.

In a boost to her health, Kate, 43, announced in January that her cancer is in remission and has since surprised palace insiders with her approach to royal duties.

Rather than limiting her appearances to joint engagements with Prince William, 42, Kate has defied expectations with a string of solo events early in the year.

Foreman added: "She is staying on message and is projecting this very mature image, a restrained elegance."

Kate's recent appearances have showcased her renewed confidence, particularly at the Commonwealth Day service on March 10 at Westminster Abbey.

The Telegraph fashion director Bethan Holt told People: "She has an inner steel about what she wants and a drive that will be reflected in what she does and what she wears."

Foreman said: "The colour was incredibly significant. You only wear red when you're feeling confident. And it says she's back."

Foreman believes Kate is "redefining her role in real time" by making her outings more meaningful.

Kate also made a solo appearance on March 17, handing out St. Patrick's Day shamrocks to the Irish Guards, an engagement she missed last year.

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith noted Kate's skill in managing expectations, saying: "When she does more than people anticipated, it has a greater impact."

Bedell Smith observed: "Looking at her being so animated was an utter 180-degree turnaround."

Royal expert Ingrid Seward added: "Kate feels enveloped by the love people have for her that gives her extra confidence."
