The Prince and Princess of Wales visited Scotland together

Princess Kate was asked who she was during an awkward encounter in Scotland.

The Prince and Princess of Wales stepped out in Scotland on Thursday to meet organisations supporting mental health.

At one point, Kate introduced herself as William's wife when a child asked who she was at a primary school.

The comment came as Kate was happily chatting with children at Burghead Primary School.

The princess told a group of children with Scottish flags: “I really like your school."

A young child then asked Kate: "Who are you?"

Giving a child a high-five, she gave a surprising reply: "Who am I? I'm married to William."

The princess pointed to her left while giving her reply, even though the Prince of Wales wasn't seen on screen.

Kate added: “I know! It was very nice to meet all of you."

The mother-of-three's answer showed her supportive role to Prince William, who is the current heir to the throne.

Royal biographer Penny Junor said: "She’s never trying to outshine him in any way.

"I think that Kate is a bit like Prince Philip supporting the Queen.

"She doesn’t outshine William but still has a lot to say herself," she told PEOPLE.

A source added that Kate "is the sort of woman who will take on whatever she needs to.

"If she needs to step up to the plate, she does it — and she always has.

"She and William are a formidable team."
