The Duke of Sussex's visit to Ukraine was not announced until after he had left the country due to security concerns

The Invictus Games Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting wounded military personnel and veterans, even in active war zones, amid Prince Harry's trip to Ukraine.

Rob Owen, chief executive of the Invictus Games Foundation, highlighted Ukraine's importance to the organisation.

Owen said: "Ukraine had been a vital part of the foundation since participating in the Invictus Games Toronto 2017.

"This visit to the Superhumans charity in Ukraine underscores the Invictus Games Foundation's broader commitment to supporting recovery and rehabilitation for wounded injured and sick service personnel and veterans, even in the most challenging environments."

The Duke of Sussex, who founded the Invictus Games in 2014 for wounded veterans, visited the Superhumans Center in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Thursday, meeting with war victims at a clinic that rehabilitates wounded military personnel and civilians.

The most recent Invictus Games took place in Vancouver with over 500 competitors from 23 nations.

Birmingham will host the next games in 2027.

Prince Harry was in London earlier this week for a Court of Appeal hearing regarding his security arrangements in the UK.

The visit to Ukraine was not announced until after the prince had left the country due to security concerns, as Lviv has frequently been targeted by missiles.

The Duke of Sussex, who served for 10 years in the British Army, was invited by Olga Rudneva, chief executive of the centre, during the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.

He is the second royal to visit Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion, following the Duchess of Edinburgh's visit to Kyiv last year.

Prince William, the Prince of Wales and Harry's brother, recently met Ukrainian refugees during a two-day visit to Estonia last month.

Prince Harry was accompanied by a group from the Invictus Games Foundation, including four veterans who had undergone similar rehabilitation experiences.

The purpose of the visit was to observe the support and rehabilitation services being provided in a country actively experiencing war, according to a spokesperson.

During his time at the Superhumans Center, the Duke met with patients and medical professionals.

He also had discussions with Ukraine's Minister of Veterans Affairs, Natalia Kalmykova.
