The Duchess of Edinburgh has been "unusually open" about her husband, according to a royal commentator.

It follows Prince Edward declaring the royal married couple are "still best friends" when asked about their enduring relationship during a recent tour of Nepal.

The couple, who recently returned from a six-day international tour, married in June 1999.

Sophie described the Duke of Edinburgh as the "most loving of husbands", highlighting that the royals make a "great team".

Former royal correspondent Jennie Bond agreed with the Duchess of Edinburgh, she said: "Sophie has been unusually open about her love for him.

"They are companions both on and off duty. They share notes about their work and talk through their speeches.

"Sophie has joked about how Edward gives her valuable support and advice, though she admits that she doesn’t always take it.

"That’s definitely a sign of a balanced, equal and supportive relationship."

Sophie celebrated her milestone 60th birthday on January 20, receiving wide praise for her increasing role within the Royal Family.

The Duchess of Edinburgh, who appeared next to Princess Kate on Remembrance Weekend last November, is said to have played a vital part in supporting the Princess of Wales through her cancer journey.

Edward, who is the youngest child of the late Queen Elizabeth, will turn 61 years old on March 10.

Bond suggests that the royals will likely enjoy a "low-key" celebration this time.

The royal expert told OK!: "I rather doubt they go in for flashy presents on routine birthdays.

"They’ve both spoken recently about how their life together is full of laughter and humour, so a jokey gift might well be on its way to Edward. Or perhaps she came across something on their visit to Nepal.

"I’m sure he’d like nothing better than a cosy dinner with his wife and perhaps a few good friends. I think the strength of their marriage is rooted in a deep and lasting friendship, along with a healthy dollop of mutual attraction and true love.

"She still finds Edward quite dashing and I’m sure he would agree that Sophie is as beautiful today as she was when they married. I think he is immensely proud of his wife."
