Ragland, aged 68, offered a measured response

Doria Ragland and Meghan Markle have issued a response to criticism about the Duchess of Sussex's fancy kitchen crockery.

The Duchess of Sussex has addressed criticism of her Netflix series "With Love, Meghan" after viewers took issue with her use of Le Creuset cookware.

Meghan responded to claims that the expensive cookware made her appear unrelatable.

The controversy has sparked debate on social media, with critics suggesting the high-end pots set an unrealistic standard for many viewers.

According to the New York Times interview, social media posts had focused on Meghan's Le Creuset pots, claiming they were too expensive for many black women to afford.

Critics also suggested the cookware was more ostentatious than traditional cast-iron options.

In response to the criticism, black supporters of the Duchess of Sussex began sharing photos of their own extensive Le Creuset collections online.

The Duchess was reportedly unaware of the controversy until the interviewer brought it to her attention.

Upon learning of the controversy, Meghan appeared visibly perplexed, throwing up her hands and turning to her mother, Doria Ragland, who was present during the interview in her Montecito kitchen.

"This is a thing, in 2025?" the Duchess asked incredulously.

Her mother, aged 68, offered a measured response: "Everyone is coming in hot these days."

The article noted that members of Meghan's team monitor comment sections and social media so she doesn't have to engage directly.

One of the defences referenced in the interview came from MSNBC journalist Michele Norris, who questioned the criticism on the social media platform Threads.

"Why is anyone surprised or disturbed that she would have beautiful colour coordinated cookware? Does anyone drag Ina or Martha for their cookware?" Norris wrote.

She continued: "Sure, it would be nice to see a big, heavy, well-seasoned black skillet up in there. But did anyone expect that? So yes, Le Creuset is beautiful, but it is not merely performative cookware."

According to the publication, Meghan is frustrated by accusations that she is unrelatable and out of touch.

"Don't they know my life hasn't always been like this?" she said during the interview, gesturing toward her home's sweeping views.

The interview took place in the kitchen of her Montecito, California home, which she shares with Prince Harry and their children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.

A framed photo of Prince Harry with his late mother, Princess Diana, was displayed nearby.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed that "With Love, Meghan" wasn't filmed in her actual kitchen but in another Montecito home, explaining to People: "I wanted to protect that safe haven. Our kitchen is where Mama just cooks for the family, and with a crew of 80-plus people, that's a lot of people to have in your house!"
