In today's GB News Daily Reflection, we remember the lessons from the story of Saint George as the nation celebrates the Chuch of England's Patron Saint.

“I'm standing here in front of this statue of the second of our church's patron saints, Saint George. Whether this likeness is accurate is probably up for debate. But it is Saint George's Day - the patron saint, of course, of England and several other nations.

“Who was he? Well, that is the question. And most importantly, did he slay a dragon? Answer. No, he didn't. Sorry.

“Most likely, George was a soldier in the Roman army who served in the Middle East some 300 years after Christ, and at a time when Christians were very much persecuted by the empire.

“A committed follower of Christ, George refused to worship the pagan gods of Rome or bow the knee to the Emperor. These steadfast Convictions and his courageous faith would eventually cost him his life.

“The Bible speaks of a battle that we are embroiled in, not one of flesh and blood. Of swords and guns, but a spiritual battle for our very souls.

“Standing for the truth is sure to be costly. Jesus said so himself, so we should not be surprised or defensive when persecution comes our way. It's par for the course.

“But the inspiration of the early Christian martyrs lies in their willingness to lose their lives for the sake of something higher. This, as Jesus demonstrated, is what love and faithfulness ultimately look like.

“Now, many today will talk the talk and signal their credentials. Far fewer will be willing to embrace the cost that love and truth really demand.”
