In today's GB News Daily Reflection, we compare the common fear of flying with humanity’s deeper fear of death, using the story of Lazarus of Bethany.
It teaches us that Jesus Christ offers believers hope that death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life through resurrection.
“When I was growing up, and still today, my mum had the most enormous fear of flying that the few times I've been on a plane with her, she had to take Valium.
“Even back in the day before the rules changed, she was allowed to go and visit the captain in the cockpit, all to calm her nerves, calm her fears.
“Now, fear of death is perhaps the most human fear to have. Because ultimately, who knows what happens next? “But the Christian faith, the Christian hope, is that we know because of the resurrection of Jesus that ultimately, death is not the end.
“Jesus and his ministry on earth had some great friends, including a guy named Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha. Now he died, and Jesus, for some reason, left him dead and buried for four days before going to visit the sisters.
“And when he did, he comforted them by saying these words, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live even though they die. And without further ado, he went out to the tomb and commanded Lazarus, come out!
“And Lazarus came out hopping, I imagine, because he was bundled together in his grave clothes. But he came back to life. And if you like, that is a picture of the future for all who put their trust in Jesus Christ today.
“That one day when God calls time on all of creation, on this age, those who believe and trust in Jesus will hear his voice calling to them, saying, ‘Come out of the grave and come into a beautiful and eternal.’”
