In today's GB News Daily Reflection, we look at how first impressions can sometimes decive and that we should never assume we have someone all worked out.
“Hi, I'm Chris Tufnell, a vicar in the Church of England. Years ago, my uncle returned home from a week-long work trip, having completely shaven his beard.
“His wife had never seen him without a beard, so when he arrived home, and she saw him, she didn't recognise who he was. Can I help you? She said before the penny finally dropped.
“I've always enjoyed getting to know people at a deeper level. One of the privileges of my job is that it often happens quite quickly as I'm talking with people.
“Maybe I learn about some tragedy earlier in their life, and it makes me see them, understand them differently. Whenever that happens, it reminds me that I should remain curious about every person I meet. Rather than assuming I have them all worked out.
“I think that's true of every person, including the person of Jesus Christ. No serious historian doubts that he existed as a historical figure. There's just too much evidence that he did.
“The question is, who was he? And I find it really interesting that for much of the biblical gospels, that's an open question in Mark's Gospel. It's not until halfway through that the disciples identify Jesus rightly.
“And in John chapter 14, there's a moment where Philip says to Jesus, Lord, show us the father. He's referring to God the Father. And Jesus reply is spine tingling, powerful.
“He says, don't you know me, Philip? Anyone who has seen me has seen the father. It's an extraordinary claim.
“When I consider Jesus, who do I think I'm looking at? Do I think I have him all worked out? Or is it possible that the penny still needs to drop?”
