In today’s Daily Reflection, Vicar Chris Tufnell from Oughtibridge Parish Church speaks about how religion can often be perceived as a form of virtue-signalling.
He recalls “laughing out loud” at a moral conundrum he recently had to ensure while taking his car to the garage.
“Virtue signalling is exactly the sort of thing Jesus criticised in his sermon on the mount, the most famous speech ever given”, he said.
“Specifically when it comes to the Christian practice of fasting, which many do during lent.
“According to Jesus, his followers shouldn’t do good, to look good, but out of love for God. Virtue signalling grows from a place of anxious insecurity.”
