GB News has decided to name the swathes of newly elected MPs who decided to support the Prime Minister’s plan to axe Winter Fuel Payments

Almost 70 Labour MPs who gained seats from the Tories and SNP have backed Sir Keir Starmer’s plan to “pickpocket pensioners” despite having the highest proportion of OAPS set to lose Winter Fuel Payments in their constituencies, GB News can reveal.

Detailed research conducted by GB News has shown that a staggering number of recently elected Labour MPs sided with the Prime Minister’s controversial plan even though more than 90 per cent of local Winter Fuel Payment recipients look set to miss out on the seasonal cash injection.

Constituencies adversely impacted by the move stretch from the South West of England to Scotland and Northumberland to Northamptonshire.

There is concern voters could now regret voting for Labour on July 4 even though just 23 per cent of over 65s supported Starmer’s candidates.

A plurality of voters (43 per cent) sided with the Tories, down from 64 per cent in 2019.

Several newly elected Labour MPs who supported Starmer’s Winter Fuel Payment plan represent constituencies that have solely voted Tory since 1945, with Bury St Edmunds & Stowmarket last returning a non-Conservative MP in 1859.

However, a number of other seats were considered bellwether marginals which flipped to Margaret Thatcher and later supported Tony Blair.

Several Labour MPs were reportedly in tears after the result of the Winter Fuel Payments vote was announced.

But the SNP’s Westminster leader Stephen Flynn accused an unnamed Labour rival of “double fist-pumping” in response to Starmer’s victory.

Only one Labour MP officially rebelled against the Prime Minister’s plan.

John Trickett claimed he could not in “good conscience” support the move.

GB News can reveal the veteran socialist is not expected to lose the whip.

A senior Labour source told GB News: “The difference between Winter Fuel Payments and the two-child benefit cap is that one was attached to the King's Speech.

“It was the programme for Government we'd just been elected on."

But who are the 64 newly elected Labour MPs who supported Starmer’s plan?

York Outer MP Luke Charters

Charters overturned a 9,985-vote Tory majority to win York Outer by 9,391 ballots. The 29-year-old described the decision as a “tough but necessary decision”, adding: “We will fix the foundations of our economy and our country and it is only then that we can truly rebuild.” However, more than 21,300 of his constituents receive Winter Fuel Payments, with estimates suggesting more than 94 per cent will now lose the cash injection.

North Somerset MP Sadik Al-Hassan

Al-Hassan penned a lengthy letter confirming he will vote for the Prime Minister’s plan to axe Winter Fuel Payments. The move will impact more than 94 per cent of the 22,800 North Somerset constituents currently benefiting from the pension perk. Justifying his decision Al-Hassan said: “That I and hundreds of my colleagues will make this decision is testament to just how tough governing in the wake of years of Tory economic chaos will be.” Al-Hassan defeated former Trade Secretary Liam Fox by just 639 votes to paint the South West seat red for the first time.

Hitchin MP Alistair Strathern

Strathern has not explained why almost 94 per cent of the 17,100 constituents in Hitchin who benefit from the Winter Fuel Payment scheme will no longer receive the seasonal boost. The 34-year-old, who switched to the Hertfordshire seat after winning Mid Bedfordshire in May, joined 347 other Labour MPs voting against the Tory motion to kill off the Prime Minister’s proposal.

Derbyshire Dales MP John Whitby

Whitby is another Labour MP not to disclose why he voted to end Winter Fuel Payments for 10 million British pensioners, including an estimated 93.6 per cent of the 22,400 who receive the payment in his Derbyshire Dales constituency. Whitby defeated former Tory MP Sarah Dines by just 350 votes on July 4, with 7,728 Reform UK backers seemingly costing the Conservative Party a key bellwether seat.

Rushcliffe MP James Naish

Naish snatched former Chancellor Ken Clarke’s Nottinghamshire seat on July 4 by 7,426 votes. However, Naish has not yet spoken out his support for means-testing Winter Fuel Payments. More than 20,200 constituents benefit from the current scheme, with 93.4 per cent of those now expected to miss out.

Congleton MP Sarah Russell

Russell defeated long-standing Tory MP Fiona Bruce on July 4 but was unable to tell constituents why she is not backing yesterday’s motion to keep the Winter Fuel Allowance. An estimated 93 per cent of the 20,000 beneficiaries will now likely lose the pension perk.

Aylesbury MP Laura Kyrke-Smith

Despite being concerned about the “most vulnerable pensioners in Aylesbury”, Kyrke-Smith sided with Starmer due to the “dire state of the finances” that Labour inherited after the 2024 General Election. In a statement addressing her decision on Winter Fuel Payments, Kyrke-Smith added: “If we do not take the difficult decisions to address the £22billion black hole in the public purse, our public services and social security system will fall into an even greater state of crisis.” However, an estimated 93 per cent of Aylesbury 17,600 pensioners benefiting from Winter Fuel Payments will likely no longer receive the seasonal pot of cash. Kyrke-Smith became Aylesbury's first Labour MP on July 4 after edging out Rob Butler by just 630 votes.

Mid Derbyshire MP Jonathan Davies

Davies was among the beneficiaries of a split centre-right vote, defeating Tory candidate Luke Gardiner by just 1,878 votes as Reform UK picked up support from 8,356 constituents. However, the red-headed Labour MP voted for ending the pensioner perk for more than nine-in-10 of the 20,350 constituents who currently benefit from Winter Fuel Payments.

Ribble Valley MP Maya Ellis

Ellis only defeated ex-Deputy Speaker Nigel Evans by 856 votes on July 4. However, Ellis is now supporting the proposal which will end Winter Fuel Payments for 93.1 per cent of Ribble Valley’s 22,000 pensioner perk recipients.

Stroud MP Simon Opher

Opher voted for Winter Fuel Payments to be means-tested yesterday even though 92.9 per cent of the 20,900 constituents who are in receipt of the seasonal cash injection will likely be impacted by the move.

And what about the six others who abstained on the motion to keep the Winter Fuel Allowance?

Suffolk Coastal MP Jenny Riddell-Carpenter

Riddell-Carpenter defeated ex-Deputy Prime Minister Therese Coffey by just 1,070 votes on July 4, with Reform UK receiving 7,850 votes. She abstained on yesterday’s Winter Fuel Payments vote. However, Suffolk Coastal is among the oldest seats won by Labour. A staggering 26,600 residents receive Winter Fuel Payments, with 93 per cent expected to miss out on the payment now. And 30.5 per cent of residents are aged 65 or over, significantly more than the 18.8 per cent average for England and Wales.

Stafford MP Claire Ingham

Ingham’s decision to abstain comes despite an estimated 92.7 per cent of Stafford’s 20,500 current Winter Fuel Payment beneficiaries looking set to miss out on the pensioner perk. However, Ingham stressed she intended to vote for the cut yesterday. "While I was unable to vote today due to illness," Ingham said, "I would have supported Rachel Reeves' proposal."

Worthing West MP Dr Beccy Cooper

Worthing West is one of the true blue Tory seats which fell away from the Conservative Party on July 4. Formerly held by Father of the House of Commons Sir Peter Bottomley, the Sussex seat records an estimated 26,300 Winter Fuel Payment recipients, with 91.7 per cent now expected to lose the seasonal cash boost.

Forest of Dean MP Matt Bishop

After defeating ex-Transport Secretary Mark Harper by just 278 votes, Bishop was returned as the Forest of Dean’s first Labour MP since 2005. However, his decision to abstain won’t go unnoticed by the 91.3 per cent of the constituency’s 21,900 residents who currently pocket Winter Fuel Payments.

Shrewsbury MP Julia Buckley

Buckley romped to victory in Shrewsbury on July 4. However, the trade unionist’s decision to abstain appears to jeopardise the pensions perk for 90.8 per cent of Shrewsbury’s 21,300 Winter Fuel Payment recipients.

Gillingham & Rainham MP Naushabah Khan

Khan shared clips supporting TUC chief Paul Nowak this week. She appeared keen to endorse Nowak’s criticisms of Nigel Farage. However, the new Gillingham & Rainham MP later appeared to stop short of taking heed of trade unionists' concerns about Winter Fuel Payments. She abstained on yesterday’s motion but data suggests 90.1 per cent of 17,200 residents will miss out on the seasonal boost.

CONSERVATIVE PARTY/PA

GB News can also reveal that Reform UK will seek support from over 65s in a pensioners’ revolt against Starmer’s plan.

Ashfield MP Lee Anderson told GB News: "Next year we've got the county elections in Nottinghamshire, and I'm telling you now, this will be on every single leaflet.

“I will name and shame every single Labour MP in Nottinghamshire that voted for this pernicious, cruel Act of Parliament."

The Tory Party is also ramping up efforts to exert pressure on Labour MPs who voted for Starmer’s plan.

Labour MPs were named with the number of local pensioners who could lose Winter Fuel Payments also being tallied.

Conservative MP Neil O’Brien told GB News: “Labour MPs who are voting to take money off of pensioners, including those who on their own admission are in poverty are making a huge mistake. 800,000 people who are losing out are in poverty on the Government’s own definition and yet not eligible for Pension Credit.

“What are they supposed to do? They have worked hard and done the right thing and are being punished for it. For this to be the very first thing that many new Labour MPs vote for is something their constituents will remember for a long time.”

The data on what proportion of local Winter Fuel Payment recipients will be adversely impacted by Starmer’s plan was calculated by estimating the potential change in pensioners missing out on the perk following boundary changes introduced ahead of the 2024 General Election.

Old boundary data was made available by the Department for Work & Pensions, making the rough estimates more than reasonably reliable.
