Former Labour minister Bill Rammell has refuted suggestions that Keir Starmer is out of touch with working people and said successive Prime Ministers have taken funding for clothes.
Speaking on GB News, he said: “[Keir Starmer] is a man who stands up for working people. Look at the workers’ rights that he’s bringing in. What about decent pay rises for hard working people in the public sector for the first time in 14 years.
“Yes, he is in touch with ordinary people. I still remember the leadership debate with Sunak, and there was something like a 37% gap in terms of which of these two people is in touch with ordinary working people and Keir was the clear winner.
“Lord Alli is a lifelong Labour Party member and supporter, and he gives money to the Labour Party. Successive Prime Ministers have taken funding for clothes and other things.
“He had [a pass to Downing Street] for a week as part of the transition.
“Everything has been declared. That's the system we have. All politicians in one form or other have taken donations. The key is that it's declarable.
“However, this is not corruption on the scale that we saw under the Tories, where there was preferential access, where there was one for the Prime Minister and another rule for everybody else.
“It’s not corruption, it was a straightforward mistake.”
