The former First Lady has been considered a potential successor to Joe Biden

Michelle Obama has said she is “terrified” about the 2024 US Presidential Election as Donald Trump looks set to take on Joe Biden on November 5.

The former First Lady, 59, never used the name of the 45th President but feared Americans were taking “democracy for granted”.

She appeared to echo Biden’s comments about the constitutional threat posed by a second Trump term in the White House.

During her conversation with Jay Shetty on his On Purpose podcast, Obama said: “What's going to happen in this next election?

“I am terrified about what could possibly happen because our leaders matter.”

She added: “Who we select speaks for us. Who holds that bully pulpit, it affects us in ways that sometimes I think people take for granted.”

Obama expressed her concerns about public perception about Washington, warning: “We cannot take this democracy for granted.”

She continued: “Are people going to vote and why aren't people voting?

“I mean those are the things that keep me up.”

Obama suggested she knew too much about events in Washington after serving as First Lady during her husband Barack Obama’s stint in the Oval Office.

The 44th President, who saw off Republican rivals John McCain and Mitt Romney, met with his former Vice President on Saturday.

The pair discussed Biden’s re-election campaign, with Obama arguing the 81-year-old needed to kick his bid into a higher gear to see off the threat posed by Trump.

Trump looks set to become the Grand Old Party’s nominee for the third successive election, with opinion polls giving the 77-year-old enormous leads over the likes of Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.

However, Trump could also overturn his 2020 defeat at the hands of Biden.

Despite only commenting on the race, the former First Lady is seen by Democrat voters as a potential successor to Biden.

A staggering 60 per cent of US voters think Biden should not run for a second-term, with just 34 per cent supporting his bid.

The shocking survey also revealed 44 per cent of Democrat voters think the party could change its nominee, with 42 per cent believing it is too late.

JL Partners found that Democrat voters would want Vice President Kamala Harris or the ex-First Lady to step in.

JL Partners conducted an opinion poll last month handing the Trump a four-point lead over his White House successor.

Such a result would likely help Trump flip Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin back into the Republican column.

It could even bring Nevada into play for a GOP nominee for the first time since 2004.

Trump’s potential White House comeback would make him just the second Commander-in-Chief to serve two non-consecutive terms in the Oval Office, with Grover Cleveland achieving the same feat in the 19th century.

Biden and Trump traded blows at the weekend as the pair addressed the anniversary of the January 6 riots of 2021.

The President said: “Donald Trump's campaign is obsessed with the past not the future. He's willing to sacrifice our democracy, put himself in power.”

Trump responded by belittling Biden for “stuttering” through his speech.
