Almost 25 per cent of those surveyed think Trump will be a better president than Biden

A large number of Britons would prefer to see Donald Trump win the US election rather than Joe Biden, a new poll has revealed.

The survey, conducted by BMG Research, discovered that 24 per cent of those polled want to see Trump return to the White House.

Of those who think the Republican candidate would be a better President, 20 per cent were Labour voters and 31 were Conservatives.

Whilst a larger portion of Britons believe that Biden should stay for a second term – at 45 per cent – the number of those backing Trump instead is telling.

Meanwhile, a third of all voters are unsure who would be a better candidate to support British interests.

Despite Biden remaining the more popular option, many believe he has had less impact on global issues than four years ago.

Biden’s impact on climate change is now at nine per cent, falling by 18 points since 2020.

In comparison, Trump’s impact is seen as greater, now standing at 10 per cent, improving by 10 points in the same period.

The poll, conducted for the i newspaper, also showed that Biden’s net rating on world peace is at zero per cent.

MG research director Robert Struthers said: “With Biden trailing Trump in many head-to-head polls in the US, the current president might wish he could sub the American electorate for the British. Britons prefer Biden by a wide margin, although a quarter of the British public would favour a return of Trump.

“However, comparing data for some of the same questions we asked four years ago, the enthusiasm for Biden in the UK has somewhat waned since their last electoral showdown in 2020.

“Britons still tend to believe Biden would more positively impact climate change, world peace, and UK-US relations than Trump, but the margin of those who share this optimism has noticeably shrunk, with Trump gaining ground on some of these fronts.”

Struthers said that whilst Britons’ opinions won’t have any outcome on the election, their thoughts mirror their American counterparts across the pond, whose enthusiasm is also beginning to wane on the current President.

Last December, a poll conducted by Monmouth University showed that Biden’s approval rating had dropped to 34 per cent, the lowest since he began his administration.

The results of the survey revealed that many Americans are dissatisfied with life in the US. 69 per cent believe that the country is heading in the wrong direction, whilst just 20 per cent think the opposite.

Whilst the majority of Democrats (58 per cent) feel that Biden is paying enough attention to their main concerns, only 11 per cent of Republicans and 25 per cent of independents feel the same.

The American public has also not viewed Biden favourably, with just 31 per cent saying the President has been giving enough attention to the issues most important to their families.

In comparison, his predecessor Donald Trump scored more positively. 41 per cent said Trump was devoting enough time to these issues.

In November 2023, Biden told reporters: “You don’t read the polls. I’ll give you 10 polls, eight of them I’m beating him [Trump] in those states. Eight of them. You guys only do two.”
