Walz won’t keep them out! Delegating migrant crisis to Minnesota governor would be disaster, strategist claims

Immigration is tipped to be one of the largest election issues, according to Goodman, and with just a few weeks remaining until the showdown between Harris and former President Donald Trump, American voters will be looking to see where their chosen candidate stands.

Reflecting on the previous four years after Harris was given the role of border czar by President Joe Biden, Goodman said they had been some of the worst ever recorded for migrant crossings.

The host of the 13th and Park podcast said: “Well, think about it, she was referred to as the borders czar.

“And as the borders czar, so described, we had four of the worst years we've had on the southern border in terms of people crossing the border in terms of dangerous people crossing the border.

“And more than ever, it's now come home to roost because it used to be an issue that was isolated to the border itself and communities across the border.

“Eagle Pass, Texas has become very infamous now because of that, but now you're starting to see the impact of this in other states, and other cities across America.

“Ask the mayor of New York what he thinks about the onrush of illegal immigrants that have come into his city. He is scared to death and he's starting to fight back, as are other mayors.

“And these are Democratic mayors who are now speaking up saying, ‘we can't take more of this’.

“So if this was a report card, you can't give the Biden-Harris administration anything but something bordering on an ‘F’ in terms of its ability to secure and protect Americans. It just really didn't work.”

Migrant crossings have been in a slow decline since February, having reduced from a record 300,000 in December 2023, according to the US Customs and Border Protection Agency.

Genevieve Collins, the Texas leader for Americans For Prosperity which advocates for policy change in the US, told GB News earlier this month that the reduction was not down to any policies implemented by Harris but rather due to seasonal change.

Donald Trump has previously claimed that Harris is a “failed border czar” and blamed her for the high number of undocumented migrants.

However, allies of the Democratic presidential nominee said Harris was “never” given that title and instead was pivotal in dealing with the “root causes” of immigration.

While trying to tackle the issue, Harris raised $5billion (£3.9billion) from the private sector to boost job creation in the region.

When then asked whether he could see Harris delegating the handling of the migrant crisis to Walz as Biden had done with her, Goodman said the decision would be a Republican attack ad waiting to happen.

He continued: “Tim Walz was in play as Governor after the horrible tragedy of George Floyd in Minnesota.

“The city of Minneapolis was in flames and was out of control. As Governor, he did not heed calls from the mayor of Minneapolis to send in the National Guard. That led to more burning, looting and deaths.

“And so when you say ‘Will Tim Walz be the person to become the new borders czar?’ after the failure of the last border czar and what she was unable to do…I think that's a campaign commercial that the Republicans probably want to make and put out there right now.

“Based on the record, it's hard to imagine that Governor Walz is going to be any better than Kamala was in stemming the tide.”
