Robert F Kennedy’s son is defying his family’s orders to run as an independent

Robert F Kennedy Jr has made a bizarre confession after admitting to dumping a dead bear in Central Park in a rambling social media clip.

Kennedy, 70, who is running for the White House as an independent after dropping out of the Democratic Party primary race, made the surprising claim during a clip released with ex-sitcom actress Roseanne Barr.

In the three-minute video, RFK Jr revealed he headed to upstate New York with pals in October 2014.

He claimed a cub was killed instantly after another motorist collided with the bear.

RFK Jr said: “I was going to skin the bear – and it was in very good condition – and I was going to put the meat in my refrigerator.

“And you can do that in New York State. Get a bear tag for a roadkill bear.”

The 70-year-old claimed the group continued with his day’s sport near Goshen in the Hudson Valley.

They later attended a dinner at Peter Luger Steakhouse some 75 miles away.

“At the end of the dinner, it was late and I realised I couldn’t go home,” he explained.

“I had to go to the airport, and the bear was in my car, and I didn’t want to leave the bear in my car because that would have been bad.”

RFK Jr alleged diners supported his plan to dump the cub’s carcass in Central Park.

He placed the cub alongside an old bicycle from the back of his vehicle to make it appear the bear had been killed in an accident involving a cyclist.

RFK Jr said: “So we did that and we thought it would be amusing for whoever found it or something.”

He added: “The next day... it was on every television station. It was a front page of every paper and I turned on the TV and there was like a mile of yellow tape and 20 cop cars, there were helicopters flying, and I was like, ‘Oh my god. What did I do?’”

Reports of a dead bear cub being found in Central Park hit the headlines in October 2014.

Central Park Conservancy said at the time that a dog walker had stumbled across the three-foot-tall creature’s carcass under a bush near West 69th Street and West Drive in the park and alerted authorities.

The New York Police Department’s animal cruelty squad investigated the incident but it remained unresolved.

New York’s law states a person can legally pick up the roadkill for its meat.

However, it requires a person to notify the Big Apple’s Department of Environmental Conservation.

The revelation comes as Kennedy’s support tanked following Kamala Harris' decision to stand to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s White House nominee.

Kennedy’s support dropped from 15 per cent earlier in 2024 to just two per cent.

The 70-year-old’s waning support suggests Harris is hoovering up previously disaffected Democrats.

Pollsters believe Harris' boost, which in many surveys puts her ahead of Donald Trump, is due to winning back African-American and Hispanic voters.

RFK Jr has grappled with controversy throughout his longshot campaign.

Kennedy, who received the endorsement of firebrand comedian Russell Brand, was disowned by his fabled family.

He was forced to address stories about suffering from a “brain worm” and accused of eating a barbecued dog.
