Donald Trump appears to have sparked a trade war against China, Canada and Mexico by rolling out a set of tariffs against the US's largest business partners - and the EU looks set to be next in line.
"I will impose tariffs on the European Union. Absolutely, I will put tariffs on the EU," the President warned on Friday. "We'll be doing something very substantial on tariffs with the European Union."
Today, the Prime Minister will travel to Brussels for talks with EU leaders - with a senior Government source telling The Telegraph that Britain will "obviously look at anything that the European Union does put forward" on a controversial youth mobility scheme.
And on Sunday, Sir Keir Starmer hosted German counterpart Olaf Scholz at Chequers.
Downing Street said: "The Prime Minister said he was committed to strengthening the UK's relationship with the EU to drive greater growth and closer security ties, which he believed would benefit all sides."
With Trump seeking to protect American interests, the EU has vowed to hit back at any potential levies.
A European Commission spokesman said the EU "would respond firmly to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods."
