Secret Service agents opened fire on a man who was spotted pointing an AK-style rifle through a fence at Donald Trump's golf club

A former Navy Seal has shared his concern for the "apocalyptic consequences" in the US if Donald Trump were to face another assassination attempt.

Secret Service agents opened fire on a man who was spotted pointing an AK-style rifle through a fence at Donald Trump's golf club whilst he was playing.

Trump was reportedly unharmed and later reassured supporters of his safety via email, stating, "There were gunshots near me, but before any rumours spread, I want to confirm: I AM SAFE AND WELL!"

The FBI has described the event as an "apparent assassination attempt". A suspect was apprehended shortly after fleeing the scene.

Former Navy Seal Erik Prince expressed outrage over the incident on GB News, and said: "He [the suspect] was clearly trophy hunting.

"He had put two ballistic plates against the fence, mounted them, and he mounted a GoPro. Why? Because he wanted to film himself assassinating Donald Trump.

"He wanted to be a hero of the left. It is disgusting. The vitriolic language demonising him like Hitler has activated every crazy left-wing nutjob to try to take a shot at him."

He also warned of dire consequences if these attempts continue: "These words clearly have consequences. It's activated these people on the periphery to say, I'm going to make my life relevant by killing Donald Trump.

"I guess it's not going to stop until they actually suffer consequences for that, whether they're dragged into court.

"If something happens to Trump again, the consequences in American society will be apocalyptic. That, I'm afraid I'm sure of."

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Secret Service agents detected the gunman hiding in bushes near the edge of Trump's golf course.

The agents, who were sweeping the area ahead of Trump's game, spotted a rifle barrel from 400 to 500 yards away and opened fire.

58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh has been named as the suspect in the case, and he allegedly fled the scene with a witness taking a photo and noting the license plate of his black Nissan SUV, authorities said.

This is the second assassination attempt that Donald Trump has faced this year, with the first taking place in July at a rally in Pennsylvania and leaving him with a minor injury to his ear.

President Joe Biden was informed of the Florida shooting and denounced the incident, calling for "unity as a nation" to condemn such violence.

Biden came under fire following the first assassination attempt in July after the 46th President claimed it was “time to put Trump in a bullseye”.

He subsequently admitted the comment was a “mistake” and argued more Secret Service Assistance was needed.
