Some campaign donors are said to be worried about his mental capacity

Joe Biden is "in denial" about withdrawing from the presidential election after his shocking debate against Donald Trump last week, insiders claim.

Some campaign donors are said to be worried about his mental capacity, as one advisor estimates that "for every 10 people who think he should exit, one thinks he should stay."

The 81-year-old is adamant that he is remaining in the race despite calls from his own party to step down.

Some insiders have suggested that even Biden himself knows on some level that he is in trouble.

Even those publicly supporting Biden have admitted privately that there is no direction with him as presidential candidate, according to the Washington Post.

"I think he's focused on recovering," one person who spoke to the President on July 4, told the Post.

"But I personally think he's still in the denial phase of grief."

It comes after the Potus gave just 32 minutes of combined public comments within the first five days after his car crash debate.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Insiders said during one of those appearances, at a $100million East Hampton mansion, donors were left shocked when Biden described a French cemetery in Normandy as "Italian".

He spoke for six minutes before leaving without taking any questions.

Later, at the New Jersey governor's private villa, it was reported that he spoke too quietly, that a crowd of 50 people could not hear him properly.

"Everyone lost confidence by Monday," an unknown Democratic member of Congress said.

"I started hearing from donors, members, everyone on Monday. It was only getting worse."

As of Saturday, five sitting Democrats have called for Biden to withdraw from the race.

Minnesota's Angie Craig said: "There is only a small window left to make sure we have a candidate best equipped to make the case and win.

"Given what I saw and heard from the President during last week's debate in Atlanta, coupled with the lack of a forceful response from the President himself following that debate, I do not believe that the President can effectively campaign and win against Donald Trump."
