President Joe Biden has sparked controversy after suggesting that former President Donald Trump should be jailed.

The comment, made at a campaign event in New Hampshire just 14 days before the election, has raised eyebrows and contrasts sharply with the approach taken by Vice President Kamala Harris.


Biden's told a campaign rally: "We gotta lock him up."

The 81-year-old president then quickly attempted to correct himself, saying "we need to politically lock him up".

"Lock him out," he added. "That's what we have to do."

His comments were made during a campaign event in New Hampshire.

The remark stands in stark contrast to the approach taken by Vice President Kamala Harris.

The 2024 Democrat candidate for has been careful to avoid such rhetoric in her campaign rallies.

She has also often attempted to quell "lock him up" chants from supporters.

Harris has told supporters the Justice Department will handle that issue while she seeks to beat the former president at the ballot box.

He also faces charges of illegally trying to overturn his 2020 election loss.


Instead, Harris consistently emphasises the importance of leaving legal matters to the courts.

Her campaign strategy focuses on preserving democracy and upholding law and order, steering clear of inflammatory language.

Biden's comment echoes the "lock her up" chants that were prevalent at Trump's 2016 rallies, which continue to be heard at his events today.
