Clooney has called on Joe Biden to step aside in the race for the presidency

Democrats across America have delivered a sure sign they are in support of Joe Biden’s presidential run and aren’t interested in what George Clooney has to say on the matter, according to a political commentator.

Speaking on GBN America, Robert Patillo hit out at the star actor after he implored Joe Biden to step aside and allow another Democrat to face up against Donald Trump in November’s presidential election.

Biden sparked fears he may not be up to the task after a poor debate showing against his 78-year-old Republican counterpart last month.

But Patillo told Mark Dolan that Americans are continuing to back Biden regardless, and have little interest in what “Hollywood elites” have to say.

“It’s not game over”, he said.

“George Clooney can’t elect a president and he can’t tell them to step down.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“We’re seeing a soft coup by the powers that be within the Democrat Party trying to subvert the will of the millions of voters that backed Biden in the primaries.

“There is no way Biden can be pushed out. He will be the nominee after the convention and he will be on the ballot.

“He has the best chance of any Democrat of beating Donald Trump. I think people have made it clear that they are uninterested in Hollywood elites telling them who they should vote for just because they have more money.

“We are a democracy, not an oligarchy, and George Clooney can keep his money if he does not support democracy.”

Clooney, who is a prominent Democrat fundraiser, had praise for the president but is sceptical about his chances up against Trump.

He said in a statement that while Biden had won many battles in his career, “the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time”.

Another Hollywood star and fundraiser, Michael Douglas, told the BBC last week he was “worried” about Biden’s electoral chances.

The president remains defiant in his assertion that he will remain as the Democrat nominee.

The 81-year-old is America’s oldest ever sitting president, and many are questioning whether he has it in him to see out another four years at the helm.

Clooney said in the New York Times that standing against Biden was “devastating” but the president he met at a fundraising event last month was not the same man he met in 2010.

“He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020”, he added. “He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”

The fundraising event, co-hosted by Clooney in Los Angeles and also featuring Julia Roberts and Barbra Streisand, brought in a single-night record of roughly $30m (£23m) for the Biden campaign.

The Biden camp hit back at the Hollywood star, with an unnamed source telling US media: “The President stayed for over 3 hours [at the fundraiser], while Clooney took a photo quickly and left.”
