Trump vows to restore British hero to 'position of honour' after Biden snub

Trump, who is a known admirer of many British heroes due to his mother's Scottish roots, once described Churchill as his idol.

A source close to Trump told The Daily Mail: "One of the first things he will do is bring the Churchill bust back into the Oval Office as a mark of respect.

"Donald idolises Churchill and believes he’s the greatest leader the world has ever seen. He will restore him to a position of honour."

Trump's admiration for Churchill was on show when he claimed the Oscar-winning film The Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldham as Churchill, was his "favourite film ever".

The Churchill bust, by English modernist sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein, was a gift from the Wartime Friends of Winston Churchill to President Lyndon B Johnson in 1965.

However, Barack Obama removed the bust from the Oval Office in 2009, replacing it with one dedicated to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Trump restored the Churchill bust to "his rightful place" after defeating Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Responding to Trump returning the bust yet again, Churchill biographer Lord Andrew Roberts said: ‘This is excellent news, but only makes sense if President Trump also backs it up by adopting Churchill’s signature policy of defiance against totalitarian dictatorships that invade their neighbors without provocation."

Churchill's grandson Lord Nicholas Soames also told The Mail on Sunday: "I am very glad obviously. That's lovely. I am glad he is doing that. I am delighted."

Trump was compared to Churchill just last week after becoming the second President to return to the White House after tasting defeat in 2020.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who was in Florida to celebrate Trump's victory, told GB News: "The swings towards Trump are truly remarkable, so I’m thrilled by that.

“On a human level, for him, this is the most incredible political comeback we’ve seen in modern times.

“No one since Churchill has gone from the top to the bottom and come back again in quite this way. That’s remarkable."

Churchill returned to No10 in 1951 after suffering a landslide defeat in 1945.
