The possible assassination on Donald Trump is "one of the biggest threats the Western world faces right now", it has been claimed.
The former US President assured supporters he is "safe and well" after avoiding gunshots on his International Golf Course property in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Secret Service agents shot at the suspect on Sunday, when they saw an AK-47-style gun poking through bushes on the course.
The suspect, named by US media as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, fled in a car and was arrested by police 38 miles away.

Speaking to GB News, US political analyst Dr Roger Gewolb warned that "all sorts of people want him gone", and the former President may have to "travel around in a perspex-style Popemobile" in order to stay protected.
Gewolb said: "Any President is a target, but somebody as controversial as Trump in this polarised climate that we find ourselves in is especially a target.
"It's happened once, and he really needs to be very careful. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him going around in a perspex popemobile pretty soon."
Noting the location of the shooting, at his golf course in Florida, Gewolb claimed that the property is "one of his favourite places" and so the incident must have been "very upsetting" for Trump.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
When asked by host Mark Dolan if he believes this will affect Trump mentally going into the final stretch of the election campaign, Gewolb made clear that this apparent second attempt on the Republican's life will only "make him stronger".
Gewolb explained: "He's a realist, he's a man who's been in business for many decades. He's had his ups and his downs, and he's a very tough guy. The key word to describe Donald Trump is resilience.
"So I think this will this will just strengthen his resolve."
However, Gewolb also admitted that the threat on Trump's life could surface again before the Presidential election in November.

Gewolb said: "This will convince the people who support Trump that there's a real danger that the enemy is seriously after him. He just needs to be very, very careful because he is a target and he's so important to the world.
"I think it's a definite possibility that he could be killed before November, and it scares me and it scares a lot of other people. I mean, nobody is is safe in his position."
He added: "I don't know what he can do, but he likes to play golf most days of the week. He loves to get out there and be with his public, so he's exposed and it's a definite possibility - it's very frightening.
"I am old enough to remember JFK being killed, and the world went into a period of depression for almost six months. It would be a horrible thing to have to go through."
