The president has announced a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for dozens of countries

President Trump is no longer a “wholly rational and responsible person”, political commentator Peter Hitchens has said on GB News.

The president has announced a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for dozens of countries.

Earlier this month Trump unveiled a ‘baseline’ tariff of 10 per cent on all countries along with higher rates for the “worst offenders”.

Higher rates will now be paused for 90 days and the “reciprocal tariff” will be 10 per cent.

Speaking on GB News, Hitchens criticised Trump as the trade war continues to brew.

“The extraordinary tariff war which has now exploded - an awful lot of people have made allowances for Donald Trump, particularly if he does things they think they like”, he said.

“I think the moment is surely coming when anybody interested in rational politics limited to the true possibilities of what will actually work should start to wonder if the person occupying the Oval Office is fit to do so.

“It’s immensely worrying if he’s doing this and he has the power to do so. This doesn’t seem the work of a wholly rational and responsible person.

“Conservatives who make excuses for Trump because he sometimes does things they like should stop doing so.”

Global markets surged on the news of this unexpected policy shift.

Trump announced the policy change on his Truth Social platform, stating: "I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125 per cent, effective immediately."

In the same post, he explained the pause for other nations: "I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10 per cent, also effective immediately."

The decision appears to narrow what had been a global trade conflict to one primarily between the US and China.

US stock markets responded positively to the announcement.
