Donald Trump declared in his inaugural address that God had saved his life for the purpose of making America great again.
The 47th US president was referring to an assassination attempt made against him in Butler, Pennsylvania during his campaign trail last year.
Speaking at his inauguration ceremony today, Trump drew a direct connection between his survival of the incident and what he portrayed as a divine mission.
"My life was saved by the grace of God to make America great again," Trump told the gathered crowd in his first speech as president.
In the same speech, Trump outlined a series of immediate policy actions he plans to implement.
The president announced he would sign executive orders introducing strict anti-migration measures across the United States.
He made promises on the economic front, pledging to lower prices and restore manufacturing jobs.
Trump also declared his intention to dismantle federal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
