Trump will face President Joe Biden in the polls in the first presidential rematch in nearly seven decades

Donald Trump has been confirmed as the Republican candidate for the Presidential election.

The Republican National Convention has formally nominated Trump to face Biden in what would be the first presidential rematch in nearly 70 years.

Trump, 78, suffered damage to his ear after an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend.

It comes as Trump selected US Senator JD Vance to serve as his vice presidential running mate.

Trump, 78, and Biden, 81, are locked in what opinion polls show to be a tight election rematch. Trump continues to falsely claim that his 2020 loss to Biden was the result of widespread fraud and has not committed to accepting the results of the election were he to lose.

In the wake of the assassination attempt, Trump said he is revising his acceptance speech to emphasize national unity, rather than highlight his differences with Biden.

Trump is due to be sentenced in New York in September for trying to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in the weeks before his 2016 election victory.

"This dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts," Trump said on his Truth Social site on Monday, also referencing the prosecutions of hundreds of his supporters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Speaking about the assassination attempt on his rival, President Biden said: "There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence ever. Period. No exceptions. We can't allow this violence to be normalized."

Trump has frequently turned to violent rhetoric in campaign speeches, labelling his perceived enemies as "vermin" and "fascists," and accusing Biden without evidence of a conspiracy to undermine the United States by encouraging illegal immigration.

Biden has often warned that a Trump victory would erode US democracy. Some Republicans have accused the President of helping to create the conditions for the shooting.

The President has ordered an independent review of how the gunman, who was shot dead by agents, could have come so close to killing Trump.

The FBI said it has gained access to the phone of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the suspect in the shooting of former Trump, as it continues to investigate his motive for the crime.

They stressed that its investigation into Saturday's shooting, which is being treated as both an assassination attempt and potential domestic terrorism, is still in its early stages.

A spokesperson from the FBI said: "FBI technical specialists successfully gained access to Thomas Matthew Crooks’ phone, and they continue to analyze his electronic devices."
