The 20-year-old, who was a registered Republican but made a $15 donation to a progressive political action committee, was situated outside the area secured by the Secret Service ahead of the rally.
Video footage taken from near Butler Park Showgrounds appears to show a man with a matching description clutching an “AR-style rifle”.
Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen Crooks on the roof of a one-storey building to the right of the stage where Trump was speaking.
The shooting resulted in Trump sustaining minor injuries, with an audience member killed and two others in serious condition.
Crooks was identified by the FBI via DNA after his body was found without any identification.
The reason behind Crooks’ attempted assassination of the ex-President remains unknown.
US LATEST:“The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania,” a statement from the FBI said.
The FBI added: “This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online.”
Bethel Park is a Pittsburgh suburb around 30 miles away from Butler.
Crooks reportedly graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022, receiving a $500 “star award” from the National Math and Science Initiative.
Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, said they were still reviewing the security detail the Secret Service had in place and confirmed that officials only discovered Crooks was on the roof when he began firing.
“We’re still working through the security apparatus that the Secret Service had in place, what potentially happened,” he said.
Rojek added: “There’s going to be a long investigation into exactly what took place and how the individual was able to get access to the location, what type of weapon he had.
“All that is really days, weeks, and months of investigation.”
Responding to the incident, Trump said: “I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.
“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.”
The ex-President added: “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.
“Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
Condemning the attack, President Joe Biden also said in a statement: “I'm grateful to hear that he's safe and doing well.
“I'm praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.
“Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety.
“There's no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
