The former President survived an attack in Pennsylvania on July 13

A third assassination attempt against Donald Trump has been foiled after a gunman presenting fake VIP credentials was arrested and taken into custody.

Vem Miller, 49, was stopped at a checkpoint ahead of the ex-President's rally in Coachella, California, on Saturday.

"This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or attendees of the event," the Riverside County Sheriff's Office insisted in a statement.

However, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco added: "We probably stopped another assassination attempt."

Miller allegedly presented fake VIP and press passes at the checkpoint which resulted in a search from officers at the scene.

He was found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition when his black SUV was searched.

Miller was booked at John Benoit Detention Center and handed a bail worth £10,000 for each of the two misdemeanors for which he was charged.

He was released from custody on Sunday but will appear at Indio Larson Justice Centre on January 2.

Officers stressed the incident did not impact the safety of Trump or any of the attendees in California.

During the former President's appearance in the Democrat-heavy state, a heckler was also removed from the rally.

However, the alleged assassination attempt comes after 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks struck Trump in the ear before being shot dead by the Secret Service in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.

Crooks had killed one Trump supporter and critically injured two others.

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested on September 15 after attempting to flee the scene when Secret Service staff fired at him for allegedly aiming a rifle at Trump while the ex-President was playing golf.

Trump, who is narrowing Kamala Harris' lead ahead of November 5, is reportedly requesting more increased security amid concern about an attempted assassination attempt carried out on behalf of Iran.

Susie Wiles, Trump’s campaign manager, allegedly emailed Secret Service head Ronald L Rowe Jr expressing displeasure with the agency’s handling of safety.

Wiles even claimed Trump was forced to cancel a campaign rally at the last minute due to a “lack of personnel”.
