Joe Biden said he is "proud" to be the first "black woman to serve with a black president" in his worst gaffe recorded.

As the US celebrated Independence Day, the president appeared to get himself mixed up with his own vice-president, Kamala Harris.

During an interview, Biden confused his own time serving as vice-president for Barack Obama.

Speaking on Philadelphia’s Wurd radio station, he said: "By the way, I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice-president, first black woman… to serve with a black president."

Obama and Harris were elected in 2008 and 2020 respectively, making him the first black president and her the first black vice-president and the first woman to hold the position.

The interview started with Biden correctly saying he appointed Harris and the first black woman to the Supreme Court, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

However, when asked why voting mattered on The Earl Ingram Show - which is aimed at black listeners in Wisconsin - the president responded with an answer that appeared to refer to the Supreme Court’s recent decision to grant Trump considerable immunity to prosecution.

He said: "You need someone, someone who is going to make sure that – the Supreme Court just issued a decision, by the way, that threatens the American principle that we have no kings in America. There’s no one above the law."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

On Thursday, the 81-year-old appeared to stumble over his words while speaking to military families on the White House South Lawn.

As he addressed the crowd, he said he was "not going anywhere" but he seemed to slip up when he referred to Trump as "one of our colleagues".

Biden's next appearances include a trip to Philadelphia on Sunday and a full news conference during the Nato summit in Washington next week.

The latest gaffe comes after Biden's car crash presidential debate against Donald Trump last week which has seen his aides faced with calls for the president to step aside.

The Republicans have launched a campaign against Vice President Harris after she emerged as the frontrunner to replace Biden - who could quit the presidential race within days according to a key ally.

Harris has been a staunch defender of Biden and has pushed back on concerns about his age and apparent deteriorating cognitive abilities.

However, a recent CNN poll has shown that Harris would be more likely to win in key demographics, including ethnic minority voters and independents if she became the Democrat candidate.
