Labour MP Oliver Ryan has been suspended by his party due to his membership of a WhatsApp group which included offensive comments.
The MP lost the whip after facing an investigation over the messages and was scheduled to meet with the chief whip today.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: "As part of our WhatsApp group investigation, Oliver Ryan has been administratively suspended as a member of the Labour Party.
"As soon as this group was brought to our attention, a thorough investigation was immediately launched and this process is ongoing in line with the Labour Party's rules and procedures.
"Swift action will always be taken where individuals are found to have breached the high standards expected of them as Labour Party members."
It is understood that Oliver Ryan's administrative suspension by the Labour Party has the automatic effect of suspending the Labour whip in the House of Commons.
When Ryan met with the chief whip this afternoon, he was informed of the decision that Starmer's party had made as a result of Ryan's offensive comments.
It comes after the ex-health minister Andrew Gwynne apologised for his "badly misjudged" messages he had made in the same WhatsApp group when he was axed from the frontbenches - and his own party.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
Greater Manchester Police said that the force had recorded a "non-crime hate incident" after Gwynne has allegedly said that he hoped one of his 72-year-old woman would die after she contacted her councillor about bin collections.
He is believed to have further comments about another one of his constituents being "mown down" by a truck.
The PM promptly dismissed Gwynne from his Government when he became aware of his vile comments while Downing Street confirmed that Starmer "will not hesitate to take action" when ministers fail to uphold high standards.
In the messages, Ryan is reported to have mocked another Labour MP's sexuality in the group chat called Trigger Me Timbers.
Although the MP in question is not named, the report highlights that the Labour politician does not refer to his sexuality in the public domain and is not known to be gay.
Oliver Ryan was elected to represent the constituency of Burnley just last year in July
GETTY
The 29-year-old Ryan became an MP in July and had previously served as a Tameside councillor.
Just yesterday, Ryan posted a statement on X condemning the messages, adding that they were "completely unacceptable".
“I regret not speaking out at the time, and I recognise that failing to do so was wrong,” he said.
“I did not see every message, but I accept responsibility for not being more proactive in challenging what was said.
“I also made some comments myself which I deeply regret and would not make today and for that, I wholeheartedly apologise.”
